{"id":456,"date":"2012-10-10T14:56:39","date_gmt":"2012-10-10T19:56:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quantum.gmu.edu\/?p=456"},"modified":"2012-10-10T15:00:27","modified_gmt":"2012-10-10T20:00:27","slug":"instructions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quantum.physics.gmu.edu\/?p=456","title":{"rendered":"Site maintenance and posting instructions"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Things to update and edit<\/h2>\n<h3>Your own research posts (web pages describing your research, projects, etc. in some detail):<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Click the &#8220;Posts&#8221; tab in the left sidebar to view the list of all existing posts<\/li>\n<li>Click &#8220;Add New&#8221; to start a new research post, or a a previously started post from the list<\/li>\n<li>Please, don&#8217;t proliferate the number of unfinished draft posts and delete the ones you abandoned<\/li>\n<li>Please, don&#8217;t publish posts until they are finished<\/li>\n<li>Maintain at least one post in the categories &lt;your name&gt; and &lt;your research field&gt;<\/li>\n<li>Write as many research posts as you wish (the more the better), and as often as you wish<\/li>\n<li>These posts are owned by &lt;your username&gt;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The common &#8220;Research Area&#8221; post:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Appears when the &#8220;Research&#8221; menu is clicked on the website&#8217;s top menu<\/li>\n<li>Should extremely concisely mention your research interests, accomplishments, etc. &#8211; at the right place and in the right context<\/li>\n<li>The purpose of the page is to present an overall research image of the Center<\/li>\n<li>Edit sporadically, only when necessary to make sure you are represented (accurately)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The common &#8220;Publications&#8221; and &#8220;Presentation&#8221; posts:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Appear when the &#8220;Publications&#8221; or &#8220;Presentations&#8221; are clicked on the website&#8217;s top menu<\/li>\n<li>Should include your published papers\/books\/etc&#8230;\u00a0 and talks\/seminars\/posters respectively<\/li>\n<li>Edit when changes occur, or once a year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The common &#8220;Members&#8221; post:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Appears when the &#8220;Members&#8221; menu is clicked on the website&#8217;s top menu<\/li>\n<li>Should include your correct contact information, picture and student\/postdoc list<\/li>\n<li>Edit sporadically, only when necessary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The &#8220;About&#8221; post and its sub-posts:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>These posts contain general information about the center and useful links<\/li>\n<li>The &#8220;About&#8221; and &#8220;Sponsors&#8221; posts list funding sources that you may wish to edit<\/li>\n<li>The &#8220;Nearby Events&#8221; post lists places other than GMU where our students\/postdocs could hear talks, visit, etc.<\/li>\n<li>The &#8220;Students&#8221; post contains other stuff of interest to students, or about our students.<\/li>\n<li>The &#8220;Web resources&#8221; post contains links to general education books, articles, internet pages, etc. in our fields<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Other content of common interest:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The &#8220;News&#8221;, &#8220;Featured works&#8221; and &#8220;Sponsors&#8221; boxes on the website&#8217;s front page<\/li>\n<li>May be non-editable by non-administrators (will be looking into this issue)<\/li>\n<li>Events&#8230; You are welcome to invite speakers, organize events and announce them on the website. Use the event manager by clicking &#8220;Events&#8221; in the left sidebar, and then &#8220;Add event&#8221;. Set the dates, time, speaker name, title, etc., type the abstract in the large text edit field. Do not edit the\u00a0 &#8220;Events&#8221; post!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>General rules:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It is solely your responsibility to maintain any piece of information about you<\/li>\n<li>The website is complicated, so the administrators will not have time to help you<\/li>\n<li>The person to ask for help is Scott Joy, <a title=\"sjoy@gmu.edu\" href=\"mailto:sjoy@gmu.edu\">sjoy@gmu.edu<\/a> (Planetary Hall 363B).\u00a0 He has designed both the SPACS and our CQS websites, and should be able to give you tutorials or help you edit content.<\/li>\n<li>Please keep things tidy.<\/li>\n<li>The administrators (Predrag and Indu) reserve the right to fix &#8220;messups&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Notify the administrators of any &#8220;messups&#8221; that require fixing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Editing posts<\/h2>\n<h3>\u00a0Type text in the large editor field:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Use the &#8220;Visual view&#8221; (default) to have standardized page formatting.<\/li>\n<li>Open the &#8220;kitchen sink&#8221; to have more editing options (an icon in the top row, or alt+shift+z).<\/li>\n<li>Set heading for section titles, justify paragraphs, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Pressing enter starts a new paragraph, use shift+enter to insert blank lines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Insert pictures, etc. by clicking the &#8220;Upload\/Insert&#8221; button above (opens a drag-and-drop dialog):<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>For large pictures across the page, prepare jpg or png in 1024&#215;512 resolution or so (aspect ratio ~2&#215;1).<\/li>\n<li>Set the picture title, size, etc. in the dialog.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t upload the same picture more than once: when inserting a picture in the post, or setting a featured image (see below), first check if you can find it in the &#8220;media library&#8221; in the dialog&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Set the post properties:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Enter the post title in the long field below the &#8220;Edit Post&#8221; above.<\/li>\n<li>Select &#8220;Simple page&#8221; in the &#8220;Publish&#8221; sidebar (or else, visitors will be invited to leave comments on the site).<\/li>\n<li>Select &lt;your name&gt; as the primary category in the &#8220;Publish&#8221; sidebar.<\/li>\n<li>Enter any desired search tags in the right sidebar.<\/li>\n<li>Change the &#8220;permalink&#8221; if desired &#8211; the &#8220;web address&#8221; at which your post will be visible to the external world.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Select the post categories:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>&lt;your name&gt; category<\/li>\n<li>&lt;your research field&gt; category<\/li>\n<li>Do not select any other categories, except perhaps Slider (see below)!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>To see the results, click &#8220;Save Draft&#8221; or &#8220;Update&#8221; in the right sidebar, then click &#8220;Preview&#8221; &#8211; a new browser window or tab will open&#8230;<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Do update\/save before leaving the editor or logging out.<\/li>\n<li>You can logout and continue working on your post later.<\/li>\n<li>Do not &#8220;publish&#8221; until all is absolutely done!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>One or two of your most representative research posts should be featured in the front-page slide show. If this post is one of them, then:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Set a &#8220;featured image&#8221; in the appropriate right sidebar (a high-resolution jpg or png with aspect ratio ~2&#215;1).<\/li>\n<li>Type in an excerpt (a short advertising text or html that describes the featured image).<\/li>\n<li>Select the Slider category in the category list.<\/li>\n<li>Select the &#8220;Place in slider&#8221; in the &#8220;Publish&#8221; sidebar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>When completely done:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Click &#8220;Publish&#8221; in the &#8220;Publish&#8221; sidebar.
